Between sunshine, rain, wind, snow, ice, and pollen…just to name a few…there are a lot of elements that it’s trying to withstand. While you can’t control the weather, you can slow down the wear and tear on your outdoor furniture so that it lasts longer.

Choose Durable Outdoor Furniture

Generally, wrought iron is the most durable type of outdoor furniture. However, it does have its downsides, as it is heavy and bulky to move, and it can rust as well. With that said, if you’re looking for outdoor furniture to stand the test of time, wrought iron is your best bet. 

Wrought iron typically takes a bit more maintenance than other types of outdoor furniture. So, you’ll want to clean it with soap and water on a regular basis. Also, most wrought iron is painted, so the paint will eventually begin to chip, and your furniture will need to be repainted from time to time. The paint also works to protect the furniture from rusting.

General Outdoor Furniture Protection

• Use furniture covers to protect your outdoor furniture from the elements, especially the harsh rays of the sun.

These sprays can be used for any furniture that has fabric, such as patio chairs and outdoor couch cushions.
• You can also invest in some furniture covers to keep your outdoor furniture dry and protected from the rain.
• If you own any wooden outdoor furniture, you can cover it with water sealant to protect it from getting damaged by wet weather.
• Keep an eye on the forecast so you can protect your outdoor furniture before wet weather hits. You can move furniture to a covered porch or garage, or you can follow any of the above steps to protect furniture that is left out in the rain.

Outdoor Furniture in the Winter

If you don’t plan to use your outdoor furniture for a period of time, such as during winter, you can place it in storage for extra protection from the elements. This is, of course, easier to do with smaller pieces of outdoor furniture. If the furniture is too big or heavy to move, you can help to protect it with furniture covers.

If you have any wicker outdoor furniture, be sure to store it indoors for the winter. However, if your wicker furniture is made of synthetic materials and not natural rattan, it should be fine to stay outside during the winter.

Spring is officially here, and I don’t know about you, but the spring flowers are one of my favorite things about this time of year. Nothing makes your outdoor space look more beautiful than some fresh, colorful flowers. So, here are some spring gardening tips to help you spruce up your yard and patio:

One of the trickiest things about spring gardening is knowing when to plant. Spring in NC can be deceptive— one day it’s 80 degrees, and the next, it’s 40. If you plant too soon, temperatures may drop and harm or even kill those young plants you’ve just put into the ground. Before you plant any flowers, do a little research about the types of flowers that you are planting; some flowers are hardier than others and can withstand some of the cooler temperatures that spring sometimes brings; some plants are dormant, and are fine to go into the ground, even if the temperatures do occasionally drop below freezing; some flowers are very delicate and only need to be planted after the temperatures consistently stay above freezing.

If you plant flowers thinking that spring is finally here, and then that sneaky NC weather throws you some cold weather, don’t worry. You can cover your plants overnight with towels and sheets to keep them from freezing. Don’t use plastic tarps to cover them, as this can actually have the opposite effect on your flowers, and make them colder. Also, don’t cover the plants too tightly as it might crush or break them. Also, remember, that if plants don’t have buds emerging yet, there’s no need to cover them. If you have flowers in a planter, and it’s going to be cold overnight, you can just easily bring them indoors for the night.

If you’re waiting for the right time to plant, you can prepare your soil in the meantime. Take a test sample of your soil to see what nutrients it contains as well as those it’s lacking; there are a number of soil testing kits available online and at stores. With this information, you can go to your local gardening center to find out how you can make your soil the perfect home for what you’re trying to plant.

The official start to spring is less than a week away, and much of North Carolina is already experiencing the beauty of spring weather. If you’ve stored your outdoor furniture away, or covered it up, during the winter, now is the perfect time to get it out and prepare it for the spring and summer.

The first thing you’ll want to do is clean your outdoor furniture. If it’s been in storage or covered it, it may have accumulated dust and spider webs. Use a wet cloth or a gentle garden hose to remove any dirt and dust. Next, sit your furniture out in the sun to dry.

If your outdoor furniture has any cushions, or you have outdoor pillows, you can dust them off as well. Then, follow their cleaning instructions to see whether or not you can place them in the washing machine or if you need to clean them by hand. The same goes for any outdoor rugs you may have.

If your outdoor furniture needs a fresh coat of paint, you’ll want to sand down the surface and remove any loose paint before doing so. Then, use a paint made especially for outdoor use, and for the material of your outdoor furniture. 

To clean an outdoor umbrella, you’ll want to detach it from its frame. Then, using a cleaning solution of 2 cups of warm water, 1 cup of white vinegar, and 1 tablespoon of dish soap, scrub your umbrella with a soft bristled brush. Next, clean with a garden hose and allow it to dry.
